Rabies Alert Area  Announced  

 

Charlotte County, FL - On Aug. 21, Charlotte County Animal Control responded to the 24000 block of Madaca Lane, Port Charlotte, (located at the Lakes of Tuscana Apartment Complex on Veterans Blvd) in regards to a dog coming into contact with a bat. The bat was confiscated and sent to the Tampa State Lab for rabies testing.

 

On Aug. 25, the Tampa State Lab confirmed that the bat tested positive for the rabies virus.

 

In response, Charlotte County Animal Control has declared a rabies alert area for the following area (map attached):

Veterans Blvd. and all areas south to Peachland Blvd.
Interstate 75 (Exit 170) and all areas west to Viceroy Terr.
Peachland Blvd. and all areas north to Veterans Blvd.
Viceroy Terrace and all areas east to Interstate 75 (Exit 170)
 

Residents in these areas should observe the following:

Report any sick or injured wildlife
Report any stray domestic animals
Report any animals acting unusual
Refrain from coming into contact with any unknown animal
Ensure that your animals are currently vaccinated against rabies
 

The rabies alert area will be in effect for 30 days (Expires Sept. 24, 2008).

Street Closure

Now through October 8th
Port Charlotte, FL – Quesada Avenue will be closed between Hinton and Kensington Streets to through and pedestrian traffic, effective immediately and continuing until October 2008.  The closure is necessary to complete work associated with the replacement of two stormwater control structures within the Dorchester and Morningstar Waterways.  Traffic from Quesada Boulevard will be detoured to Peachland Boulevard on either Hinton Street or Kensington Street.
